Choosing the right container for your flower bouquet is not as easy as you might think.

The vase should never dominate the bouquet. The relative size of the flower bouquet should be between 1/2 and 2/3 of the entire arrangement including the vase (the vase should be about 1/3 to 1/2 of the entire arrangement).

Regular 2 to 1 relationship of flowers and vase:

However, there are exceptions to this rule. For example if you have a very tall but narrow vase, you can certainly use it for a small bouquet. This way the vase and bouquet complement each other without the vase overpowering the bouquet. This looks especially nice when your bouquet features droopy flowers and greens such as ivy and Queen Anne’s Lace.

The worst you can do is place a bouquet that is very small in a large vase, so that it tilts to one side instead of resting nicely in the middle of the vase. While this can be a design element, if not intended, it looks tacky.
